Scope & Content There are two pictures. One photo is of the Gravity Methodist HS Senior Class of 1924-25 of Lulu Johnson and the other is the Gravity Methodist HS Basketball Team picturing Virginia Johnson in 1925.
Biographical History Lulu Johnson was born in Gravity, IA in 1907 where she was captain of the girls basketball team and secretary of her Sunday school. She was the first African American to receive a Ph.D from University of Iowa despite discrimination against African American students. With her degree in History she became an educator holding faculty or administrative positions at colleges and universities around the country. She retired in 1971 as the director of the Department of Social and Behavioral Science at Cheney State. Lulu Johnson died on October 19, 1995
