Biographical History Mount Zion was the second African American church founded in Cedar Rapids. As more African Americans moved to Cedar Rapids from the South at the beginning of the Great Migration, there was need for an additional church. A small group met with officers of the Iowa Baptist Convention on February 4, 1914 at Sunshine Mission at the corner of Third Street and Sixth Avenue. The first baptized member was Sister Almena Wilson. The first minister was Rev. Ross, who worked part time. Late in the year, Rev. Northcross of Buxton became the pastor. A parsonage was built and a building from Huss Memorial Church was moved to a site 824 8th Street, SE. A senior choir and a Sunday School were organized prior to 1930. On March 22, 1958 the original building burned and for six months services were held at Jane Boyd Community Center. Groundbreaking was held for a new church on April 27, 1958, the cornerstone was laid on July 27 and the church could be used by November 27, 1958. Formal dedication of the new building was held on July 12, 1959. The mortgage was paid off on July 8, 1962. Additions were made to the church in 1962 and 1979. A new parsonage was purchased in 1967.
