Biographical History |
Robert Matthew Carney was born on February 28, 1928 in Steubenville, Ohio to mail carrier Richard Dink Carney and his wife, Birdie Mae. In 1933, when Carney was only five years old, his mother passed away, sparking his interest in medicine. Carney went on to graduate from Wintersville High School in 1946. Shortly after graduation Carney joined the United States Army Medical Corps to qualify for the GI Bill. He entered Brooke Army Medical Training Center in San Antonio, Texas, until he was stationed in Hawaii. Carney lived in Schofield Barracks, a desegregated barrack. He remained part of the military until May 29, 1949, when he was an honorably discharged. From 1947-1949 Carney attended classes at the University of Hawaii. During his college years Carney worked a variety of jobs. During the summers he was employed as a waiter on trains traveling from Chicago to California. Additional jobs included selling knives in Westchester County and scrimping?? in Pittsburgh, New York and Nashville. In 1949 Carney enrolled at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and in 1952 earned his bachelor's degree in zoology. After earning his B.A. Carney went on to enroll in another educational institution in Nashville: MeHarry Medical School. After spending two years at MeHarry, Carney earned his graduate degree in physiology in 1954. Carney stayed at MeHarry and eventually earned his medical degree in 1958. From July 1958 to June 1959 Carney worked as a rotating intern at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On June 18, 1959 Carney received his Ohio medical license, although he never practiced in the state. Shortly after receiving his Ohio license, he received his Iowa state license on July 8, 1959. In 1959 Carney started a family practice in Brooklyn, Iowa. His practice served the areas of Brooklyn, Grinnell, Belle Plaine, Marengo, and Tama. In this same year Carney also joined the staff at Grinnell Hospital, where he worked until 1996. In 1964 Carney began serving as the medical examiner for Powesheik County. Carney held this position until he resigned on February 19, 1965. In this same year Carney moved his private practice from Brooklyn to 821 Broad Street in Grinnell, Iowa. In 1988 Carney also began to practice at the Mercy Care Clinic in Belle Plaine, Iowa. Carney maintained his practice in Grinnell until 1992, and in that same year also decided to leave the Mercy Care Clinic. In August 1992 Carney began to work at the Tama Clinic in Grinnell Hospital. He left the Tama Clinic in August 1996 to retire, but decided to continue his work as the medical examiner for Poweshiek County. From 1997 to 2000 Carney served as a locum tenens; he could serve for other physicians on a temporary basis and maintain his medical credentials. On June 18, 2002 Carney died of congestive heart failure. He was survived by his wife Patricia McKeag Carney, foster-son Dennis Shields, daughters Rubie Marie Carney, Darla Ann Carney, and Wendy Lee Carney, as well as his two grandchildren. |
